What Is International Calling?

International calling refers to making a phone call from one country to a phone number registered in another country. Unlike local or domestic calls, international calls require additional dialing codes so the call can be routed across international telephone networks.

To place an international call, the caller begins by dialing the exit code of their country and the country code of the destination, before dialing the local phone number, including area codes (if any).

International calls can be made through traditional carriers or internet-based phone services. The dialing format stays the same, but call quality, cost, and availability may vary based on the provider and the destination country.

Common Mistakes to Avoid While Dialing International Phone Numbers

When dialing international phone numbers, small errors often cause calls to fail or connect incorrectly. Many times, it happens due to small dialing mistakes, such as forgetting the exit code, entering the wrong country code, or using an incorrect number format.

Forgetting the Exit (dial-out) Code

This is one of the most common reasons for many international calls to fail. When you call any other country, you must begin your call with your exit code. It instructs your telephone network to route the call internationally. If you forget this step, the call stays within the local network and does not reach the destination country.

Using an Incorrect Country Code

Each country has a unique country code. Entering the wrong code directs your call to the wrong country or blocks it completely. This usually happens when countries have similar codes or when the number is saved incorrectly. So, always double-check the country code before dialing.

Not Removing the Leading Zero from the Local Numbers

In many countries, local phone numbers usually start with the digit ‘0’. However, this zero is normally removed when making an international call. Not removing it can block the call or result in a failed connection.

Mixing up Mobile and Landline Number Formats

Mobile and landline numbers often follow different dialing patterns. The landline numbers often include the area codes, whereas the mobile numbers consist of the unique mobile prefix. If you dial a mobile number using a landline format, or vice versa, the network may reject the call.

Trying to Call Toll-free Numbers from Another Country

Toll-free numbers are usually designed for use only within their home country. When you try to call a toll-free number from abroad, the call may not connect or may be blocked by the carrier. Some providers may allow you to call, but it may still incur charges.

Things to Consider When Calling An International Phone Number

Before making an international call, it's important to check a few key details to avoid failed connections and unexpected charges. Pay attention to the following factors to make sure your call goes through smoothly and at the right time.

Time Zone Differences

Countries operate on different time zones. The destination country you’re trying to reach may be several hours ahead or behind your country. So, always check the receiving country’s local time before calling to avoid reaching someone too early or too late.

International Call Rates and Charges

International calling rates often vary depending on your carrier, the country you’re calling, and whether you’re dialing a landline or mobile number. To avoid surprises on your bill, it’s a good idea to check rates before you dial. Planning ahead keeps costs predictable.

Carrier or Service Restrictions

Some phone carriers may not allow international calling automatically. You may need to request your carrier to enable this feature. In certain cases, carriers may also block calls to specific countries due to fraud risk or regulatory reasons. If your call doesn’t connect even with the correct format, your phone plan or carrier settings could be the cause. Check with your provider in case you encounter this.

Call Quality and Network Reliability

For crystal clear international calls, you will require strong network connections. Weak mobile signals or slow internet can cause dropped calls, delays, or poor sound quality. Always place your call from a location with a reliable network.
