SMS Segment Calculator
Type or paste a text message to see how many SMS segments it uses, and how the same text counts as an RCS message. A standard SMS segment holds 160 characters. One emoji or curly quote switches the message to Unicode, which holds only 70. Calilio charges text messages per segment, so fewer segments cost less.
Results are an estimate. Your Calilio usage history shows the final segment count for every message sent.
The Basics
What Is an SMS Segment?
An SMS segment is one piece of a text message, and it is the unit carriers bill. The number of characters a segment holds depends on the encoding, which is the character set the phone network uses to send the message.
A message that does not fit in one segment is split. Each part then carries a small header that tells the phone how to join the parts back in order. The header costs 7 characters per segment in GSM-7 and 3 characters per segment in Unicode.
| Encoding | Used when the message has | Characters in one segment | Characters per part when split |
|---|---|---|---|
| GSM-7 (standard) | Only letters, numbers, and symbols from the GSM-7 set | 160 | 153 |
| UCS-2 (Unicode) | Any emoji, curly quote, or character outside GSM-7 | 70 | 67 |
In GSM-7, these characters use two spaces each: [ ] { } ~ ^ | \ and the euro sign.
How It Works
How Does the SMS Segment Calculator Work?
The calculator reads every character in your message, picks the encoding a phone network would use, and splits the message the same way the network does.
- 1
Type or paste your message
Paste the exact text you plan to send, including links, names, and sign-offs.
- 2
Pick the settings
Choose Smart Encoding and the encoding for SMS, and the recipient region for RCS. Automatic encoding suits most messages.
- 3
Read every detail
See segments, remaining characters, the segment each character lands in, its code units, and any non-GSM characters.

How Can You Send Fewer SMS Segments?
Most extra segments come from a few characters, not from long messages. These four checks catch them before you send.
Swap Curly Quotes and Long Dashes
Text copied from Word, Google Docs, or a phone keyboard often brings curly quotes, long dashes, and hidden spaces. Each one switches the whole message to Unicode. Set Smart Encoding to Yes in the calculator to see the count with those characters swapped for plain ones.

One emoji cuts the segment limit from 160 characters to 70. A 120-character message with one emoji is billed as 2 segments instead of 1.

Square brackets, curly brackets, the tilde, the caret, the vertical bar, the backslash, and the euro sign each use two spaces in a standard SMS.

The Remaining number shows how many characters fit before another segment is added. Shorter words and shorter links keep a message inside the limit.
