    The area 901 code was implemented on January 1, 1974, to manage the growing demand for telecommunication services. It was one of the 86 area codes established by AT&T and the bell system.

    901 area code used to cover the entire state but it became difficult to meet the state's growing population and demand for phone numbers. Then, 901 was split into 615 and 731 in 1954 and 2001, respectively, to address the rest of the state's demand.
